Conclusion: Intake of N-acetylglucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for 12 weeks or longer had a positive impact on knee joint function and home physical activity in middle-aged and elderly individuals with knee pain and/or stiffness.
Trial Design

50 participants (11 male, 39 female; age 52–87) with knee osteoarthritis pain/stiffness
Daily intake: 100 mg NAG + 180 mg chondroitin sulfate (CS)
Duration: 24 weeks

Efficacy for Joint Health (Study 2)

Conclusion: Long-term intake of a NAG-containing soy milk beverage improved subjective symptoms and range of motion in subjects with mild knee pain, stiffness, and/or discomfort.
Trial Design

67 participants (27 male, 40 female; age 54 ± 12.8) with mild knee osteoarthritis pain/stiffness
Daily intake: 200 ml soy milk beverage containing 1,000 mg NAG
Duration: 12 weeks

  • Significant improvement in pain during stair climbing and at rest

Efficacy for Joint Health (Study 3)

Conclusion: Daily intake of 500 mg or 1,000 mg NAG has the potential to improve cartilage metabolism by inhibiting the degradation of type II collagen in joints.

76 healthy adults without osteoarthritis (male: female = 33: 43)
Daily intake: 500 mg or 1,000 mg NAG, or placebo (green tea extract)
Duration: 16 weeks + 4-week post-intervention follow-up

Results
  • The C2C (type II collagen cleavage product) / PIICP (type II procollagen C-terminal propeptide) ratio was significantly reduced compared to the placebo group
